Excerpt from Star Rider Emerges

From the top of Oray Peak it seemed like I could see across the world. This was one of my brother Baymond’s and my favorite places to climb in the Karjar Mountains. I’d grown up with these jagged peaks surrounding me and thought of them as sentinels guarding our village in Whispering Valley.

From the top of Oray Peak it seemed like I could see across the world. This was one of my brother Baymond’s and my favorite places to climb in the Karjar Mountains. I’d grown up with these jagged peaks surrounding me and thought of them as sentinels guarding our village in Whispering Valley.

Panting from the difficult climb and thin air, I felt alive with the wind tearing at my long hair as I took in the incredible beauty of my surroundings.

Baymond and I had set out the day before on a short backpacking trip and I was enjoying spending a few days in the mountains with him.

“Toemeka, look. A Starfighter!” Baymond exclaimed.

I turned to see where he was pointing. His black hair, which came to his shoulders, shone in the sunlight. At nineteen he was just a year older than me and good-looking enough that the girls in the village followed him with their eyes. In the distance I spotted the fighter, a one-man spacecraft and my heart quickened.

Other Starfighters appeared followed by flashes of light. Fiery blasts erupted.

“It’s an aerial battle right over us!” Baymond exclaimed. I glanced at him and saw that his eyes were wide with alarm. “They might discover the village. We’ve got to go warn our people.” He immediately started down the rocky trail.

I picked up my heavy backpack and fastened it on before hurrying after him. “The elders shield our village, making it invisible to ships flying overhead.”

Baymond glanced back at me. “There are sorcerers who can detect our village.”

A chill went through me. I’d heard of sorcerers and their dark powers but had never seen one. Were some really stronger than the elders of our village?
